A Journey to the Heart of Turkish-Japanese Friendship

A Journey to the Heart of Turkish-Japanese Friendship

#ErtuğrulFrigate #JapanTurkeyFriendship #HistoryDiscovery

For every Turkish citizen, the name “Ertuğrul” resonates with deep emotion. In 1890, the Ottoman frigate Ertuğrul, on a goodwill mission to Japan, was caught in a violent typhoon off the coast of Kushimoto. Among the 656 sailors on board, 587 tragically lost their lives. However, what happened next created a bond of friendship that has lasted for over 130 years.

The Heroic Rescue at Kashinozaki

In the middle of that stormy night, the local villagers of Oshima Island witnessed the disaster. Despite being poor and having very limited food supplies, the villagers did not hesitate. They jumped into the freezing sea to pull survivors to shore. They used their own body heat to warm the freezing sailors and offered their precious emergency food—sweet potatoes and rice—to the 69 survivors. This selfless act of “Omotenashi” (Japanese hospitality) remains a symbol of humanity that transcends borders.
