Japan has two major consecutive holiday periods known as “Golden Week” in the spring and “Silver Week” in the autumn. While these periods offer beautiful weather and vibrant festivals, they are also the absolute busiest times for domestic travel. For international tourists, understanding these dates is crucial for a smooth and enjoyable trip.

📅 When Do They Occur?
| Holiday Period | Dates & Key Characteristics |
|---|---|
| 2026 Golden Week (Late Apr – Early May) |
April 29 to May 6 A cluster of four national holidays. Warm spring weather makes it the #1 travel season for Japanese citizens. Expect massive crowds everywhere. |
| 2026 Silver Week (Mid-September) |
September 19 to 23 A rare 5-day holiday that only happens in certain years depending on the calendar alignment. Even on normal years, these two autumn holidays create busy long weekends. |
🎏 The Magic of Golden Week (GW)
Showa Day (Apr 29)
Kicking off GW, this day honors the birthday of the former Emperor Showa. It’s a day meant for reflecting on Japan’s turbulent 20th-century recovery.
Constitution Memorial Day (May 3)
This holiday celebrates the promulgation of the 1947 postwar constitution and is a day to reflect on the meaning of democracy and peace.
Greenery Day (May 4)
A day to commune with nature and be thankful for blessings, prompting many to visit parks, gardens, and the countryside.
Children’s Day (May 5)
The final holiday, celebrating children’s happiness. Families hang colorful carp streamers (Koinobori) representing strength and success.
🍁 The Serenity of Silver Week (SW)
Respect for the Aged Day (Sep 21)
Held on the 3rd Monday of September, this day honors elderly citizens. Many Japanese return to their hometowns to visit grandparents.
Autumnal Equinox Day (Sep 23)
Falling around September 22-23, this holiday marks the changing of seasons and is traditionally a time to visit family graves and pay respects to ancestors.
Citizens’ Holiday (Kokumin no Kyujitsu)
Under Japanese law, if a weekday falls exactly between two national holidays, it automatically becomes a public holiday. This rule is what occasionally creates the rare 5-day Silver Week.
⚠️ Why Tourists Should Avoid Traveling During GW & SW
While it might seem fun to be in Japan during a major holiday, for international travelers, Golden Week and Silver Week are generally considered the worst times to visit. Here is why you might want to adjust your itinerary:
Pro-Tip for Smart Travelers 💡
If your schedule is flexible, we highly recommend planning your trip to Japan for mid-to-late May (right after Golden Week) or October (after Silver Week). The weather is still absolutely perfect, prices return to normal, and you can enjoy Japan’s beautiful sights without the intense domestic crowds!
